Promoting and disseminating research is one of the Society's key objectives and it works to meet this objective in a number of ways. The Society publishes the learned journal Thorax in partnership with the British Medical Journal.

The College is established to advance education and research in Emergency Medicine. The College is responsible for setting standards of training and administering examinations in Emergency Medicine for the award of Fellowship and Membership of the College as well as recommending trainees for CCT in Emergency Medicine. The College works to ensure high quality care by setting and monitoring standards of care, and providing expert guidance and advice on policy to relevant bodies on matters relating to Emergency Medicine.

The faculty is launching a new postgraduate Diploma in Remote and Offshore Medicine in October 2008. This programme is aimed at providing a qualification to health professionals working in remote and offshore environments. The challenges of working in this type of geography and the political climate of the location necessitates a unique skills set.

Expedition & Wilderness Medicine (EWM) is delighted to launch the International World Extreme Medicine Conference and EXPO series. This inaugural event, between April 15th and 18th 2012, will be held at 1 Wimpole Street, central London, home of the Royal Society of Medicine.   The conference will deliver four days of 31 CME-accredited knowledge, insight and innovation in the field of remote medicine and its sub-disciplines: expedition and wilderness, pre-hospital and disaster and relief. Delivering these messages will be speakers who are amongst the global leaders in these specialised fields, who are ideally placed to provide expert knowledge.  Accredited for 31.75 CME.

The ISTM Research Award program provides moderate grants (typical awards will be in the range of USD 5,000 to 10,000 although a single grant of USD 20,000 will be considered for exceptional proposals) each year through a peer-review process implemented by the ISTM Research and Grants Committee. These grants are designed to stimulate travel medicine research by supporting comprehensive research projects or, for larger projects, providing support for pilot studies to enable researchers to collect data/test hypotheses so that they can then apply to other agencies for more substantive research grants.

Model 9602-GSM is a pocket-size, low-cost Iridium/GSM tracker. It can be programmed to automatically switch between the Iridium and cellular networks based on a predefined set of conditions. It can send either a standard or a 256-bit AES encrypted GPS report at a pre-programmed interval ranging from continuous to once every seven days. The interval can be changed remotely while the unit is in the field.

The Wilderness Medical Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization (a public charity for the public good beyond our membership) with a mission of promoting education, medical care, and research in wilderness medicine.

The Wilderness Medical Society (WMS) is keenly interested in fostering awareness and appreciation among healthcare professionals and scientists for the research of health-related concerns in outdoor and wilderness activities. The Humanitarian Aid Grant was developed in response to the 2010 Haitian earthquake in an attempt to support WMS members involved in humanitarian and disaster response efforts. However, Humanitarian Research Aid Grant applications will be considered for projects worldwide, regardless of country.
