NEW Dartmoor Course | Expedition Medicine

We are delighted to announce that we are going to be running a second UK EML Course in May 2009, down in Dartmoor. The course will be very similar to the current UK Course based in Keswick.
The aim of the course is to provide aspiring and experienced expedition doctors, nurses, paramedics and advanced medics with the skills and practical knowledge to become valuable members of an expedition team. It is entensive and thorough, drawing on the skills within the expedition medicine faculty.
The course will be run over a 4-day period based in the beautiful landscape of Dartmoor. There will be both lecture and outdoors education programme and you will be pushed both mentally and physically. The Expedition medicine faculty aims to present you with valuable skills in a logistical and progressive fashion, culminating in a day of moulage and subsequent feedback.
Please email Luci to express an interest as we envisage this to be a very popular destination.
NEW EML UK course speaker
In March we are delighted to have join us Andy Cave, mountaineer and author. His life is testament to how motivation plus teamwork and an ability not to be limited by the expectation of others, can lead to the realisation of extrodinary goals. Read more about Andy Cave here.
The Double D's
As you all know, 2008 see's Expedition Medicine hold it's two new courses the Desert and Diving Medicine Courses or as we like to say the Double D's!
The Desert course is set in Namibia - a truly amazing place. The course will feature animal tracking, setting up camp, building shelters as well as learning all about tropical diseases and managing animal bites - plus much more. Set in a real remote area, ideal for this course. Click here for further details.
The Diving and Marine Medicine Course is set in Oman, a great country of outstanding beauty, friendly people and a rich marine environment. The underwater scenery is similarly dramatic with picturesque walls and reefs with healthy coral. The course will help develop your skills through a combination of practical and evening lectures. As well as diving, kayaking, managing medical emergencies at sea, you will also spend your evenings in a beach tented camp on the edge of the sea, covering the more academic elements of the course. Click here for further details.
Charity Partnership | Polar Medicine Course
We have set up a partnership with SAFER (SubAntarctic Foundation for Ecosystems Research), a non-profit organisation engaged in the ecological restoration of islands.
They undertake ecological restoration work and research in the Falkland Islands and other high latitude ecosystems. They aim to improve wildlife habitat and develop techniques that can be shared with other nature reserves elsewhere.
From February a percentage of your course fee from the Polar Medicine Course, will go to SAFER.
We are also planning to set up other charity partnerships, so each course will have it's own charity partner. Once these have been agreed we'll let you know who we are supporting.
NEW Mountain Course | Expedition Medicine
We are planning a new course in 2009, to add to our course portfolio. We are in the early stages of investigating a mountain medical course set in Nepal, covering basic rescue techniques, altitude related illness and medicine in remote areas. It's a stunning country and we believe will make a fantastic course. To express an interest email Luci.

Still time.............
Yes the Namibia Marathon is only a few months away but there's still time to take part and train. You can either choose an ultra marathon distance or a regular marathon distance. Join us on a 120km race over 24hours through the most hostile desert coastline on the planet - the Namibian Skeleton Coast. The race takes us through gravel plains framed by distant ridges and mountains, past dramatic upheavals of granite iselbergs, and takes place under the clearest blue skys. Participants will be required to remain self sufficient over the 24 hour period carrying their own food and equipment for the duration of the event, although water will be provided every 20km.
For further information on this and other events visit the website here.
